The start of the City Link:

 NLUK

The city link with the beautiful English University city Oxford dates back to1946 and belongs to the oldest city links of the world! The idea for this twin city link was born at the end at the end of the second World war.

The initiators were:

Albert Milhado
Dutch radiojournalist Albert Milhado (in the war working for "Radio Oranje)" Albert Milhado died in 2001
Stanley Rous
and the English journalist Stanley Rouse (later on the president of the Worldfootball association FIFA)

Both believed that the very close (illegal) contacts that consisted during the war had to been continued after the war. In this way the terrible experiences during the war could be shared: to cry together and laugh together. After the war  the "Landelijke organisatie ter bevordering van het Engels-Nederlandse Sportcontact" was set up. This organisation twinned 45 cities in Engeland and the Netherlands. The old university city Leiden was linked to the much older university city Oxford.
